Knowing Him - Part 1 - The Father
In this short series, “Knowing Him” we will look at the Father, Son, & Spirit of God.
We usually always have questions or question who God is no matter where we are in your walk in faith. Whether God is new to us, or we have been raised, or around, a religion, as long as we can remember. So, lets R3TALK about knowing Him!
Reveal: Who is God is probably one of the oldest and most asked questions in time. So lets go to His word and look at a few pieces of scripture to see what He tells us.
Colossians 1:16 “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities - all things have been created through Him and for Him.”
1 John 4:16B “God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”
1 John 1:5 “This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.”
Revise: In these three verses we see three foundational principals of who God is.
First, is that He is the creator of all things and for by Him we have life and through Him we have eternal life.
Second, we see God is love and as we share the love, we have received He is in us. Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 for a deeper understanding of what God says love is. There is one part of these verses I do want to call out and it is “love does not seek it’s own”.
This is a great example that we commonly overlook of God’s greatest gift of His love in the gift of free will for us all to make our own choices. He does not force us to follow Him or to do what He created for us to do.
Third, is God is light and in Him is no darkness which means there is no evil or no-good thing. I believe around times of darkness in our lives is when we ask the questions of who God is? or why God?
The bible has multiple versus and stories where people are facing challenges where it sometimes identifies on this side of Heavan we may never understand why we face pain and suffering but that does not change who He is and how it can’t be used for His good. If we were to be honest with ourselves a lot that pain and suffering is self-induced due to our misuse of the free will we received or by others who use this gift for their own purpose and evil.
Revive: Let’s look at what we have read and our new understanding, or view, of who God is.
First, it is easy to disassociate God from the creator especially in our social societies today but the more we see God as our only source, and the provider and creator of everything else and see those things as only resources they are the more we can pursue & praise the provider not the productions.
Second, knowing God is love and what love is helps us know and associate what we receive and who it is from. 1 John 4:8 says, “The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love”. It is safe to say we have all been hurt, offended, or been on the unloving side of someone who has professed to be a christian or follower of God.
What we need to remember is we are all sinners and we need to embrace love as defined by God and share the grace that was given to us. Seeing & defining God through people who misrepresent through an act or how they behave is like seeing or defining yourself by the acts of human kind and history. A person or moment does not define another, especially God.
Third, since the beginning and evil found it’s way into this world the enemy has always tried to turn you against your Father. For without our Father we are lost and loose our understanding of the first two points and the identity of ourself and Father and the darkness that is not in Him fills us instead.
Understanding who He is helps us to understand who we are. Knowing and building a strong foundation of these principals gives us strengthen to live as we are called with love and grace. John 13:34-35 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men will know that you are My desciples, if you have love for one another.”
By doing this commandment we help others to know who He is and who they are while we all go forward in our walk and journey of Faith.
